  The swing seat did serve its purpose over the years on their trips back to Wild Horse Valley, but only when the children were awake and playing on the verandah at their parents’ feet. Come bedtime, after the children were tucked up for the night, and often, before the dishes were even done, Marco made sure he lived up to his wife’s revised expectations of her perfect husband.

  Chloe had no complaints. At all.
